Numeracy - April - June 2026

Numeracy

Number

  • Read, write and order numbers within 999.
  • Demonstrate value of any number within 999 using base ten material
  • Round numbers within 999 to the nearest 100 and to the nearest 10.
  • Use knowledge of place value to develop a practical method for vertical addition HTU (with carrying).
  • Develop a standard written method for vertical addition HTU (with carrying).
  • Use knowledge of place value to develop a
  • standard written method for vertical subtraction HTU (no exchange), estimating the answer before calculating.
  • Solve a range of addition and subtraction problems, using both written and mental calculations, selecting the operation required.
  • Mentally add/subtract 9, 19, 29, 39 etc from any number, answers within 100.
  • Know with quick recall multiplication facts for 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and apply in problem-solving situations.

Measures

  • Understand and use 5 minute intervals “past” the hour: analogue and digital time.
  • Understand and use 5 minute intervals “to” the hour: analogue and digital time
  • Measure and compare capacities, read scales, use addition and subtraction to solve word problems linked to capacity.

Shape and Space

  • Measure and calculate perimeters of 2D shapes
  • Name lines e.g horizontal, vertical, diagonal and parallel.
  • Describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

Data Handling

  • Collect data through observations, surveys and experiments.
  • Construct own Tree, Venn and Carroll diagrams and use to sort sets of objects, shapes, pictures or numbers etc for two criteria.
  • Represent data from frequency tables as bar charts (vertical and horizontal), using paper and ICT, correctly labelling the axes.
  • Interpret given and self-constructed bar charts.

Represent data by constructing and interpreting pictograms where the symbol represents more than one object.

World Around Us

  • What and when was WW2? Placing events on a timeline
  • Who was involved? Naming the main leaders, matching them to their countries and flags. Locating their country on a world map.
  • The Home Front – The Blackout and Air Raid Shelters. Creating blitz art. Testing materials to see if they are suitable for the blackout. Investigating the best material/size for a parachute.
  • Evacuees – Packing a suitcase and traveling. Making an evacuees packed lunch. Writing a letter home.
  • Rationing – What did families eat? Reading, following and testing out WW2 recipes.
  • Children in the War – Toys and schools.
  • VE Day and Remembrance – Celebrating peace

Literacy

Talking & Listening

  • Listen to and follow instructions accurately.
  • Speak clearly and audibly with confidence to a range of audiences.

Phonics

  • know and understand that a sound can be represented by more than one letter.

Writing

Sentence Level Work

  • use awareness of grammar to decipher new or unfamiliar words, e.g. to predict from the text, read on, leave a gap and re-read; use these strategies in conjunction with knowledge of phonemes, word recognition, graphic knowledge and context when reading.
  • identify pronouns and understand that they stand in place of nouns;
  • substituting pronouns for common and proper nouns in own writing;
  • distinguishing personal pronouns, e.g. I, you, him, it and possessive pronouns, e.g. my, yours, hers;
  • distinguishing the 1st, 2nd, 3rd person forms of pronouns e.g. I, me, we; you; she, her, them;
  • investigating how pronouns are used to mark gender: he, she, they, etc.,
  • ensure grammatical agreement in speech and writing of pronouns and verbs, e.g. I am, we are, in standard English
  • use speech marks and other dialogue punctuation appropriately in writing.
  • understand how sentences can be joined in more complex ways through using conjunctions in addition to ‘and’ and then’, e.g. if, so, while, though, since, when
  • investigate through reading and writing how words and phrases can signal time sequences, e.g. first, then, after, meanwhile, from, where

Word Level Work

  • develop further understanding of the spelling and meaning of prefixes,

e.g. mis-, non-, ex-, co-, anti-

  • use their knowledge of these prefixes to generate new words from root words, e.g. lead/mislead, sense/nonsense, and understand how they give clues to meaning, e.g. extend, export, explode; mislead, mistake, misplace;
  • develop further understanding of the use of the apostrophe for contraction, e.g. couldn’t
  • understand the purpose and organisation of a dictionary and thesaurus.
  • develop further understanding of synonyms.
  • know the term ‘homonym’ and understand that some words have the same spelling but multiple meanings.
