Help us celebrate World Water Day on Friday 21st March!
27th Feb 2025
Our ECO committee are working hard on our main topic for our Green Flag application...WATER.
We have planned a whole school assembly on Friday 21st March and we would love to share our data that we have collected to show the impact of all of our pupils and staff using our school water bottles kindly provided by our wonderful PTFA. In our school we know that drinking fresh water hydrates our brain cells and can improve our concentration, attention and help us to remember everything we are learning in our classroom and outdoors! We will be getting our new water butt for the P1 play area to collect, harvest and re-use rainwater in our play and gardening activities. We will then be going back to our classrooms to take part in a WATER topic lesson using resources provided by The Global Goals for Sustainable Development and we will share some of the activities here on our ECO page to show you all what we have been getting up to on the day!
Over the past two years there has been a lot of learning tied in to our WATER topic. Last year our P5 class studied the cross curricular topic 'The Blue Planet' and found out all about oceans, waterways and our very own school pond. We loved carrying out pond dipping and gathering data to show our findings to the rest of our school community.
Our Shared Education programme with our partner school, St Patrick's PS, focussed on climate action and we were able to explore the effects of climate change on our oceans and waterways and the impact of flooding and drought around the world. We found out that unsafe drinking water can contain harmful bacteria and cause illness and death and how lucky we are to have clean, safe water supplied to the taps in our homes.
For the last two years our whole school have enjoyed a summer trip to the seaside. Our pupils have benefitted from learning about and exploring the West Strand at Portrush and The Giant's Causeway on our beautiful North Coast where we were all keen to play on the beach and paddle in the sea...definitely a chance to dip our toes and feel the natural power of the ocean beneath our feet!
This year P6/7 have completed work on Lough Neagh examining the complex history, geography and geology (science of rocks) surrounding the largest lake in the British Isles. The class went on a field trip to Lough Neagh Discovery Centre where they took a walk to a bird hide with binoculars for a closer look and also completed pond dipping tasks. They found out how it supplies about 40% of Northern Ireland's drinking water and were able to see some of the algal bloom that has been well publicised on the news. They have created a lovely display in their classroom to show off their work on this topic.
We hope that by celebrating World Water Day on Friday 21st March we can help our pupils know that water is the liquid that makes life on earth possible...SAVE WATER, SAVE LIFE!
