World War I

7th Nov 2014

On Thursday 6th November 2014 Dungannon Primary School pupils planted a Tree of Remembrance to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War.

Special thanks to Mrs Carol Walker, Director of the Somme Heritage Centre, and members of The Anchor Somme Association.  Both organisations were most helpful in assisting us as we planned for this event and many World War One artefacts were on display in the main assembly hall.  Particular thanks also to Mr Leslie Holmes.  Mr Holmes  kindly donated the plaque which was placed in front of our Tree of Remembrance.

Thanks also to The British Legion for attending and participating in our special service of remembrance.  Mr McAree played the cornet and Mr Kirkland played the bagpipes.  Finally, thank you to Rev. Forster for leading us in our service.

This was a truly memorable event and serves to encourage the pupils of Dungannon Primary School to remember the sacrifice of millions of people to ensure we are offered the opportunity to live in a society of harmony and peace.
